Farmers Yarn No.3: Ben Moore, Federated Farmers

For Farmer’s Yarn No.3, we catch up with Ben Moore, from Federated Farmers and Farmy Army. Ben takes five to chat all things Repost!

How did you get into Federated Farmers role?

I have been involved with Federated Farmers for around 12 years, holding elected positions both regionally and nationally. Recognising the need for strong advocacy within the rural sector. I have been involved in the Adverse Events space for Federated Farmers for 6 years, mainly coordination of Stock Feed, and more recently with the aftermath of Gabrielle and Hale.

What Ag background do you have?

A mixture, arable in the UK and mainly Dairy here in NZ, also pheasants in a past life, but that’s a yarn for another day.

How did you hear about Repost fence posts?

I came across Repost whilst running Commence The Re Fence project. The HBRC were saving posts from landfill and using Re Post to recycle and process. Federated Farmers were asked to distribute the recycled posts, of which 15,000 have been sent out to date, with more to come.

How do you find Repost fence posts over comparing to new posts?

Bloody good, we used a lot in Eskdale, and in doing so we saved a lot of money.

How did you install them (post borer, free hand)?

Post rammer, although whilst fencing after Gabrielle, we were in unknown ground so in some places a rock spike was needed.

What type of fenceline have you done (wire, netting etc)

The Commence the Re Fence Project fenced 90 Kilometers on 170 properties from Ruatoria to Porangahau, go on, use Google if you need too. A mixture of all types of fencing.

What advice would you give to other wineries on the fence about using our waste solution or to farmers who are wondering if our resource is going to be worth the cost save to buy new posts?

Most companies throughout the world are reducing waste or at least are trying to be seen to reducing waste. You really can’t knock Repost’s idea, it truly is a wonderful way of reducing waste and it also benefits the rural sector as well. It’s another great NZ story.

Greg and Dansy are so easy to get on with, an hour on the phone with Dansy is an hour well spent, there’s usually a little person squawking away in the background, but that’s just how they roll. Nothings ever too much for them and they are very laid back. Can’t wait for Repost to start a site in the central North Island!
